Red-oxide priming: what it does, and what it does not
On most of our structural packages, red-oxide priming of fabricated members is in our scope. It is one of the least glamorous line items on a job and one of the most commonly misunderstood.
What a primer is for
A primer does two jobs. It sticks to bare steel, and it gives the next coat something to stick to. Red oxide additionally offers modest corrosion inhibition — enough to protect members through fabrication, storage, transport and erection, which may be several months.
That is the whole intent: get the steel from the yard to standing in the frame without rust taking hold. It is a holding coat.
What it is not
Red oxide primer is not a finish, and it is not a protective system for a corrosive process environment. Left as the only coat in a distillery or an ethanol plant — humid, warm, with spillage — it will chalk and break down, and rust will start at the edges and welds first.
If the structure needs long-term protection, it needs a specified system over the primer: a suitable intermediate and finish coat, chosen for the environment, with a stated dry film thickness. That is a separate scope and should be priced separately.
Where priming actually fails
Almost always at preparation, not at the paint. Primer applied over mill scale, oil, or a damp surface will lift regardless of quality. It also fails at the places nobody reaches: the back faces of cleats, the inside of box sections, and the areas around welds where the coat was burnt off and never touched up.
Touch-up after erection matters
Handling damages primer. Slings mark it, bolted connections scrape it, and site welds burn it away completely. A frame that was fully primed in the yard will still have bare patches once it is standing. Touching up those areas after erection — particularly at connections and site welds — is what decides whether the primer did its job or merely looked like it did.
The practical summary
Prime for the journey. Specify a real system for the service life. And budget the touch-up, because the frame that arrives perfect will not stay perfect through erection.
