PEB or conventional structural steel: how to choose
We build both, so we have no reason to push one over the other. The choice comes down to what the building has to carry and how unusual its shape is.
Where PEB wins
A pre-engineered building is optimised in the factory: tapered built-up sections, standard connections, purlins and sheeting designed as a system. For a long, wide, single-storey enclosure with a clear span and a light roof — a godown, a raw-material store, a covered yard, a workshop bay — PEB is usually lighter in steel, quicker to put up and cheaper overall.
You feel the advantage most on repeat geometry. If the building is essentially the same frame repeated down its length, PEB is very hard to beat.
Where conventional steel wins
The moment the structure has to carry process equipment, the arithmetic changes. Point loads from vessels, platforms at odd levels, openings for ducts and pipe runs, vibration from rotating equipment, and future load changes all push you towards conventional hot-rolled sections detailed job by job.
PEB frames are efficient because they are optimised for a known load case. That efficiency becomes a liability when the load case keeps changing — which is exactly what happens on a plant during detailed engineering and again during commissioning.
The honest middle ground
Most plants we work on use both, and that is the right answer more often than either extreme. The process block, the distillation structure and the pipe racks are conventional. The husk godown, the grain store and the switchyard building are PEB. We have built both on the same site.
Questions worth asking before you decide
- Does anything hang off the frame, or sit on it, other than roof and walls?
- Are platform levels driven by equipment access, or are they clear floors?
- How likely is the layout to change after the steel is ordered?
- Is there a crane in the building, and what does it weigh?
- How long is the clear span, and is it the same all the way along?
If most of your answers point to equipment and change, detail it conventionally. If they point to enclosure and repetition, PEB will serve you better and cost less.
